Popular American play to perform at Stephens in November

David Wise

On Nov. 12, Hal Holbrook in “Mark Twain Tonight!” will come for its fourth Ames performance — the play was last performed in Ames in 1995.

Holbrook first portrayed author and humorist Mark Twain — best known for his novels “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” — 50 years ago, and since then has played Twain in more than 2,000 performances.

In addition to the production, the Celebrity Café Presentation will take place at 7 p.m. in the Stephens Auditorium lobby. It is a free, informative presentation for attendees to hear a presentation about Holbrook and Twain.

Holbrook has starred in the TV series “The Bold Ones: The Senator” in the 1970s and has made appearances in shows such as “The West Wing,” “The Sopranos” and “ER.” He has performed in movies such as “All the President’s Men,” “Julia,” “Wall Street,” “Hercules” and most recently “Into the Wild,” which earned him Screen Actors Guild and Oscar nominations.
