The ISU volleyball team dominated its weekend competition to win the Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa City.

The 11th-ranked Cyclones defeated rival Iowa 3-1 Friday night, Drake 3-1 Saturday morning and Northern Colorado 3-0 Saturday night to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The weekend was filled with personal bests as sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Peterson tallied 14 kills and junior libero Ashley Mass recorded 27 digs against Iowa. Senior middle blocker Diane Kieger had a strong showing off the bench with four kills and three block assists. Junior outside hitter Victoria Henson also recorded 14 kills to start off her strong weekend performances.

“We were fortunate that Victoria had a great match and Kieger came off the bench and played well for us,” said head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch in a press release after the Iowa match.

The personal bests kept coming against Drake as sophomore middle blocker Debbie Stadick recorded 12 kills, while freshman setter Alison Landwehr recorded 13 assists despite playing in only one set. The win was the team’s ninth straight over Drake.

Kieger recorded a season-high 10 kills against Northern Colorado while Henson had 11 kills in the match en route to her fourth straight double-double. The win gave the Cyclones their best start since 1997, when they were also 8-1.

Johnson-Lynch grabbed a milestone of her own, racking up her 86th win to put herself second on Iowa State’s all-time wins list with the victory against Northern Colorado. Johnson-Lynch passed up Sharon Hitsman, who coached the Cyclones from 1978 to 1980.

The Cyclones will be back in action Wednesday night as they begin their Big 12 conference schedule against Colorado at Hilton Coliseum.
