A woman lost control of her Harley Davidson motorcycle, laid it down and hit her head on the pavement Wednesday morning near South Dakota and Steinbeck after a car behind her stopped abruptly.

“She’s got a pretty significant bump on her head, lost consciousness for a moment, so she’s being taken to the hospital for observation,” said officer Harry Samms, the responding officer from the Ames Police Department.

Traffic was backed up on South Dakota down to the light at Lincoln Way behind the two squad cars, ambulance and fire truck that responded to the incident at 7:24 a.m.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, Samms said. Witnesses reported that the woman had nearly lost control of her motorcycle while turning onto South Dakota.

Samms said when he arrived on the scene, several people, including an ISU nursing student, had stopped to make sure the woman was OK.

“I was really pleased to see that a lot of people stopped to help her,” Samms said.
