Man falls down elevator shaft at Legacy

A man who fell down an elevator shaft early Saturday morning at Legacy Towers, 119 Stanton Ave., died after being taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center, 1111 Duff. Ave, according to a press release from Mike Brennen, public information officer with the Ames Police Department.

On the seventh floor of the building a plywood barrier was constructed Saturday morning  completely blocking access to the elevator.

Ames Police responded to a call saying that a man had fallen down the shaft and upon arrival discovered a 19-year old man who’d fallen seven stories, according to the release.

The man  was visiting friends and is from out of state.

Tobit Bowles, asset manager for Campustown Property Management who manages the building, met with a number of inspectors from Iowa Workforce Development today in the lobby of the building. He said he was unable to comment on the details of the situation but his office would be issuing an official statement shortly. 

The man’s name is being held pending notification of his family according to the press release.
