MENS BASKETBALL:Deadline to apply for NBA draft is approaching

Chris Cuellar

With the declaration day fast approaching and Craig Brackins still withholding his status for the NBA draft, expect an announcement from the Iowa State athletic department before the 11 p.m. Sunday deadline. April 26 is the date for all underclassmen and international players under 22 years of age to declare their eligibility for the National Basketball Association. ESPN.com has Brackins listed No. 18 in the Top 100, with five of those above him returning to school for another season of NCAA ball.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore treated Cyclone fans to 20 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, and his return would solidify the middle of coach Greg McDermott’s squad. His departure would mean the Cyclones lose their leading scorer and rebounder, and only performer from the 2008-2009 season who matched the Big 12 competition game in and game out.

Brackins said as soon as the season was over that he would weigh all the options on leaving school, but the Cyclones’ season ended on March 11, leaving him almost six weeks to announce his intentions. Whether he stays or goes, Brackins should be announcing his decision this weekend.
