On a weekend where the lights were a little brighter and the pressure bumped up a bit, the distance runners stole the spotlight.

The distance runners dominated their events, as Hillary Bor won the mile, Guor Marial took second in the 5,000-meter run, and James Galvan finished third in the 800-meter dash.

Bor finished with a time of 4 minutes, 4.58 seconds, nearly missing the NCAA provisional qualification time of 4:04.00. Although Bor ran well, he feels as though he can run faster.

“[Saturday] I didn’t feel very good. I felt good this week and I expected to run faster”, Bor said.“It was entirely mental. The first lap I said ‘I’m tired,’ so the only thing I could do was wait until the last 400 and try to make a move, and it worked for me.”

Bor believes, however, this performance will slingshot him into Big 12 Championships in two weeks.

“Yeah I feel more confident, I know that conference will be a little fast … I feel like I’m in good shape, better than last year,” Bor said.

Marial also performed very well, leading most of the 5,000, then finishing second with a time of 14:06, breaking the provisional qualifying mark of 14:10.

“I feel good, a little disappointed — actually very disappointed — but nothing you can do about it. It’s indoor and the first time for us to have this kind of meet. It was a big step for us, me and Kyle,” Marial said, “I was tired coming in but I feel good.”

Now he sets his sights on an automatic qualifying time.

“That’s definitely a goal, today I hit the provisional mark, but the plan for next week is to be ready for two weeks from now and get ready to perform for Big 12’s, and maybe get an auto qualify there.”

Marial’s teammate in the 5,000, Kiel Uhl, also provisionally qualified with a time of 14:08.

Teammates Galvan and Elphas Sang also both broke the provisional qualification mark of 1:50 in the 800meter, Galvan with a time of 1:49.20, and Sang with a mark of 1:49.70.

Although the distance runner highlighted the meet for the Cyclones, the men also had many solid performances elsewhere. Specifically, Luke Pinkelman and Zac Brouilette continued to compete, hoping to make the list of NCAA participants.

Brouilette threw 19.77 meters in the weight throw, finishing fifth in the competition. Pinkelman continued to improve his provisional mark by throwing 17.90 meters, eclipsing his previous mark of 17.77 meters. Pinkelman has thrown farther every meet.

Up next for the Cyclones is the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 27.
