WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Elite-eight team to be honored at halftime

Ten years ago, fourth-year head coach Bill Fennelly, who turned around a program that prior to his arrival had nine straight losing seasons, guided his squad to their first and only appearance in the elite eight round of the 1999 NCAA tournament.

Besides making school history, the tournament run brought Iowa State national attention.

“I think it sent a message that for a place that had never been good that it was possible that Iowa State could have a decent women’s team,” Fennelly said.

Members of the 1998-1999 elite-eight team, as well as a number of other former letterwinners, will be honored at halftime of the Cyclones’ showdown with No. 14 Kansas State. The halftime appearance is part of a weekend-long letterwinners’ reunion. “It’s going to be a huge weekend for Iowa State, just bringing in those players and that team, for what they did for this university,” said senior Heather Ezell. “It’s going to be a special weekend and hopefully we can preform at our best for them.”
