WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Defense fuels victory over Nebraska

For the first time in five years, the Cyclone women’s basketball team suited up in cardinal-color uniforms and beat Nebraska at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Head coach Bill Fennelly said it was a significant victory  for this  year’s team.

“Certainly a very, very big one, one that people inside the program know how much it meant to us,” Fennelly said. “We haven’t won over here in a long time … Really, really important for us to finally break through over here in a situation that was very hard.”

The Cyclones forced 22 Nebraska turnovers, the most an ISU conference opponent has thrown away this season.

The Huskers committed 15 turnovers in the first half alone.

“I thought our kids really, really locked in defensively,” Fennelly said. “Our kids work hard at it. We have to be a solid defensive team.” Iowa State converted 20 points offensively from Husker turnovers.

Allison Lacey was a force in the defensive backcourt for the Cyclones. The Australian snatched six steals from the Huskers and dished in seven assists for Iowa State.

Iowa State nabbed 15 steals from the Huskers, nine of which were in the first half.

“We were able to create some steals that we didn’t really get normally,” Lacey said.

Senior Amanda Nisleit was a threat on both ends of the court with nine rebounds, nine points and two steals. Senior Nicky Weiben had seven boards, ten points and two steals for the Cyclones.

“We didn’t panic, our posts did a good job rebounding,” Lacey said.

Senior Toccara Ross added six boards, and Fennelly said it was her best game of the season.

With a trey from Ross and a jumper from Lacey in the final minute of the first half, the Cyclones took a surge into the locker room and brought it back onto the court in the second half.

“It gave them the momentum going in [to halftime],” Husker sophomore Dominique Kelley said. “It was a huge disadvantage and just kind of carried over.”

Yvonne Turner and Kelley both posted a dozen points for the Huskers.

Iowa State forced Turner, one of the Husker’s key players, to turn the ball over six times.

After shutting down a top Missouri player, Kelsey Bolte held Husker leading-scorer this season Cory Montgomery to just five field goal attempts. Montgomery finished out the night with only five points for Nebraska.

Iowa State pulled down 34 boards and Nebraska had 29.

Offensively, the Cyclones were all over the boards, out-rebounding the Huskers 18 to ten.
