MASON CITY, Iowa — Mason City police say an 83-year-old woman was critically burned when her robe caught on fire while she was apparently trying to put out a cooking fire.

Elaine Person, of Mason City, was injured Monday morning. She was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to Hennipen County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Authorities say Person was likely attempting to extinguish a cooking fire when her robe caught fire. She then apparently ran from her home.

Fire officials say a burned pan had a lid placed on it and the stove was shut off.
