Forty minutes couldn’t decide a winner between in-state rivals Iowa State and Northern Iowa, so the two played overtime until the Cyclones prevailed, 71-66.

Iowa State (5-1) scored the last 6 points in a game where the Cyclones only forced three turnovers, and two of them came in the extra session.

The Cyclones can thank Craig Brackins and Diante Garrett for single-handedly muscling the Cyclones to victory. Brackins scored a season-high 32 points and recorded a career-high 16 rebounds.

Garrett added 17 points of his own and he scored 6 of Iowa State’s 9 points in overtime.

The Cyclones almost won the game in regulation, but Northern Iowa scored 6 of the last 7 points in the second half, including a game-tying 3-pointer from Kerwin Dunham with five seconds remaining.

Northern Iowa took away Iowa State’s 3-point shooting allowing just two Cyclone treys to fall, but that just opened the door for Brackins down low in the paint. Brackins’ 32 points and 16 rebounds were both McLeod Center records.

ISU head coach Greg McDermott picked up his first victory in three tries over his old team. It was also McDermott’s first victory over a Missouri Valley team.

The Cyclones and Panthers traded baskets the entire first half as neither team held more than a 5-point lead. There were nine lead changes, and when the buzzer sounded to end the first half, Northern Iowa had itself a 33-31 lead.

The Cyclones were led in the first half by Craig Brackins’ 13 points, which included a nifty alley-oop dunk assisted by Diante Garrett.

Iowa State faced its largest deficit of the game early in the second half at 46-41, but a 12-0 run highlighted by dunks by Brankins and Jamie Vanderbeken gave the Cyclones a 53-46 lead.
