Iowa regents take up tuition increase

IOWA CITY (AP) — The Iowa Board of Regents is scheduled to vote next week on a 4.2 percent increase in tuition at the state’s three public universities.

The increase, which will be voted on Thursday, is for in-state undergraduates at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

If approved, annual tuition for students at Iowa would go to $5,782. Students at Iowa State and Northern Iowa would pay $5,756.

Regents President David Miles says the universities have already cut $7 million from their budgets this year because of declining state revenues. He did rule out a tuition surcharge for 2009-10, citing the “unprecedented level of uncertainty” over Iowa’s economy and the global financial crisis.
