SWIMMING: Iowa State hopes breast stroke leads team to Victory at Iowa

The ISU swimming and diving team hopes to ride the momentum it gathered from last Saturday’s meet into Friday night’s meet against the Hawkeyes in Iowa City.

Last season, the Cyclones hosted the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series meet in Ames and just managed to squeak by the Hawkeyes with a 152-148 victory. The Cyclones come into this meet with a 5-1 record, while the Hawkeyes hold a 3-1 record. However, Iowa is coming off of a solid second-place finish at the Missouri Invitational.

“It was a close meet last year, so I expect about the same results this time as well,” said ISU coach Duane Sorenson. “This meet always brings out the best of both schools, and I expect the team to perform at a high level.”

The Cyclones have been phenomenal in breaststroke races this season and have the results prove it. Jeli Nixt has yet to lose the 100 breaststroke race this season, and senior Marni Benson has been just as good in the 200.

“I expect our best events to be the breaststroke, with Jeli and Marni, and, in the 100 butterfly, Abby Glaser is performing well as well,” Sorenson said.

Sorenson said he does not think the swimmers will feel more pressure because the meet is an in-state rivalry.

“It is not so much pressure,” Sorenson said. “I just expect the team to perform at a higher level.”

In diving, Tien Tran has won seven events in the last seven meets. Last year, against Iowa, Tran won the one-meter and placed third in the three-meter. The diving team also performed well last Saturday and hopes to keep up that momentum as they head to Iowa City.

The meet will be held at the Field House pool in Iowa City at 6 p.m. Friday. This will be the last dual meet until the Cyclones travel to take on St. Olaf on Jan. 16.
