Flamingo flies the coop at Des Moines zoo

DES MOINES, Iowa — Officials at Des Moines’ Blank Park Zoo are looking for a flamingo that flew the coop.

Zoo spokesman Terry Rich says the adult flamingo was discovered missing Tuesday morning. It had been spotted outside the zoo on the city’s south side.

Rich says the adult flamingo is 2½- to 3-feet tall and grayish-pink in color.

He says the zoo’s animal keepers are out looking for the flamingo. Zoo officials also are asking anyone who spots it to call police or animal control.

Rich says flamingos usually don’t fly because their wings have been clipped but that the birds can molt and grow those feathers back, allowing them to take flight.
