After an offensive explosion Friday, the ISU soccer team failed to finish off the weekend on Sunday, falling 2-1 in double overtime on the road against South Dakota State.

SDSU entered Sunday’s game coming off a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Eastern Washington on the first night of the Jackrabbit Invitational.

The Cyclones (3-3) held the Jackrabbit offense in check during the opening half, holding them to only three shots on goal.

Just minutes into the second half, Iowa State appeared to capture the momentum as junior Amanda Nimtz scored the game’s first goal.

Iowa State held the lead for 13 minutes before the Jackrabbits netted the equalizer in minute 59.

The Jackrabbits continued to pound the Cyclones defense, putting up 12 shots. Despite the onslaught, Iowa State was able to keep the score tied at the end of regulation.

During overtime it was all South Dakota State.

The Cyclone offense was stale throughout the extra time, as the team didn’t record a single shot. South Dakota State continued to pour it on offensively, eventually breaking through with a goal in the 106th minute.

Sunday’s game was almost a complete reversal of Friday’s, when Iowa State started the weekend with a 4-1 thrashing of North Dakota State.

The Cyclone offense was hot throughout the contest, assaulting the Bison goalkeeper with a season-high 25 shots on goal — 14 more than they had against SDSU.

Although the Cyclones managed only a 1-0 lead going into half, the team’s continual attack paid off in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of 15 minutes.

Senior forward Leslie Hill led the ISU attack, notching two goals and an assist.

Hill’s first goal came in the 72nd minute as she cashed in on the assist from Mary Kate McLaughlin to put the team up by three. Less than a minute later Hill again found herself in the heart of the Bison zone. This time sophomore Jordan Bishop dished the ball to Hill, who knocked it through for the second time.

Besides Hill, juniors Lauren Odino and Casey Bothwell both registered goals for the Cyclones.

The Bison scored in the last 15 minutes, but at that point the game was all but over.

Goalkeeper Ann Gleason, along with Hill, was named to the All-tournament team. The junior notched 12 saves over the weekend, which matched her season total.

After opening the season with three straight weekends on the road, Iowa State will finally have their home opener Friday against the 1-4 Drake Bulldogs.
