Last minute goal gives Cyclones the win

The celebratory sounds of “Ole,Ole” pumped through the speakers of the ISU soccer complex Friday after sophomore Julie Chen scored the game-wining goal in minute 88, as the ISU soccer team defeated the Drake Bulldogs 2-1 in its home opener.

After missing numerous chances to score, the Cyclones (4-3) mounted one final attack as regulation time neared an end.

Junior Elise Reid aired a corner kick from left of the goal. Freshman Laura Wooster gained control of the cross and sent the ball hurtling toward the Drake goalkeeper, Jenny Schroeder. Schroeder knocked the ball away, but Chen was able to redirect the deflection past Schroeder, bringing the large crowd of 892 to its feet.

“We were knocking on the door [the entire half] and we finally got that goal,” said coach Wendy Dillinger. “Reid did a great job to get to the corner, playing it to Laura, who had a great turn, put the ball across; and Julie did great job at getting us going.”

The Cyclones kept pressure on the Bulldog defense throughout the game, recording 20 shots, but were only able to score twice.

“We created a lot of dangerous chances in front of the net that we have to finish,” Dillinger said. “If you look at the chances we had, especially in the second half, if we put 3 or 4 of those away, [the score] wouldn’t even be close.”

Iowa State didn’t give the crowd long to settle in at the start of the game, scoring its first goal in minute nine.

Junior forward Amanda Nimtz took the ball at midfield and muscled her way down the right sideline before sending a cross toward the goal. Drake managed to clear the ball out to the top of the penalty box, where senior Leslie Hill was waiting wide open.

“I’ve been working on, in practice, following every shot, so if I wasn’t there I would have been in trouble,” Hill said.

The senior from Plano, Texas, immediately sent her shot skimming across the ground for her third goal of goal of the season. With that score, Hill moved into first on the team in total points and tied Nimtz for first in goals scored.

Drake didn’t let the Cyclones keep the lead for long.

In minute 20, Drake dribbled into the ISU zone almost untouched, which left goalkeeper Ann Gleason on her own to stop the attack. Bulldog forward Elizabeth Woerle made the most of the mismatch, scoring the equalizer.

Toward the end of the half, Nimtz found herself with a wide-open chance right of the goal, but a slight hesitation caused her to miss the shot.

“I saw the defender coming in from my left, so I tried to play it low, but apparently she got a foot on it,” Nimtz said. “I personally thought I had a good touch, but the girl had an angle on me.”

Several times in the first half, the Cyclone defense struggled to gain control of the ball, causing them to commit unnecessary fouls. Dillinger said the 10 fouls came from a combination of frustration and not being completely in-sync.

“A lot of times we end up late on tackle just because we weren’t in good position before the ball got played there,” Dillinger said.

With the win against Drake, as well as the 2-0 win against Northern Iowa two weeks ago, the Cyclones are now two for two against in-state rivals. Iowa State will go for the sweep Sunday as the Iowa Hawkeyes head to Ames for the 1 p.m. game.
