Getting ready for your voice election day

Make your vote count by registering to vote.

Story County Auditor Mary Mosiman said her office has witnessed an increase in the number of registrations recently.

“We are seeing quite an increase [in voter registration] now that students have returned to campus. There are a couple of organizations working hard to give students the opportunity to register,” Mosiman said.

If you have not yet registered, you can also find a form online and at the Story County auditor’s office, the secretary of state’s office, public libraries, Department of Transportation offices and political party offices.

As the election nears, Mosiman said the auditor’s office will work to “make sure [students] know exactly what’s going on for Election Day” by hanging posters and working to increase awareness on campus.

What you need to know about registering to vote:

Iowa residents

If you were previously registered to vote at your non-Ames address in Iowa and don’t plan on returning to your hometown to vote on Nov. 4, Mosiman said to make sure to update your registration to your Ames address. You do not need to provide any identification or proof of residence.

Non-Iowa residents

If you are registered in your home state, you may register with your Ames address by providing the last four numbers of your social security number. Although you can register on Election Day at your polling place, you must provide information that establishes your identification and residence. Mosiman said students should bring their government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license from their home state, as well as another document, such as a utility bill or bank statement, that establishes their school address.

Voting absentee

In order to vote absentee, you must request an absentee ballot by 5 p.m. on Oct. 25. The ballots will begin to be mailed out 40 days before the election. In order to have your absentee ballot counted, you must have it postmarked the day before the election or return it in person to the auditor’s office by the time polls close on Election Day, Mosiman said.

Where to vote

By registering your Ames address before Oct. 25, you will receive a card from the Story County auditor that lists the name and address of your polling place.
