After a disappointing 11th place finish at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, junior James Galvan stood out as one of the bright spots for the Cyclones.

Galvan was Iowa State’s highest place finisher, taking second in the 800-meter run.

Galvan, who finished with a time of 1 minute, 50.86 seconds, was up against Texas Longhorns’ Jacob Hernandez, who holds the fastest 800 time in the Big 12. Hernandez beat Galvan with a time of 1:48.96.

Galvan said he still has things to improve on for future races.

“I still have a lot I need to work on. It’s still early in the season. I’m still trying to perfect my training with me and my coach,” Galvan said.

Iowa State faced a strong Big 12 field that featured seven of the top 25 ranked men’s indoor teams. No. 7 Texas claimed the Big 12 title, scoring 106 points.

The Longhorns were able to hold off Nebraska, which fell two points shy of the title.

Freshman Hillary Bor provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor meet after he ran a career best time of 4:03.43 in the mile run. Bor’s third-place finish blew away his previous personal best by nearly six seconds, which he had set the day before in prelims.

Running in his first Big 12 championship, Daniel Fadgen also scored in the mile run. He finished eighth to earn a point for the Cyclones.

Zac Brouillette had a career day in the weight throw, throwing for a personal best 59 feet 10.50 inches and finishing seventh. The junior from Sioux City improved from his score of 51-03.50 at last year’s championships.

In the 400-meter dash, first-year runner Derron Montgomery ran a 47.62 to earn a fifth-place finish. Montgomery, who is a wide receiver for the Cyclone football team, is coming off an ACL injury he suffered at spring football practice in 2007.

The ISU relay team of Brandon Rooney, Jared Lewis, Michael Alexander and Jayden Russ took fourth place in the distance medley relay in a time of 9:59.97. Texas won the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:45.39.

David Lantz, a returning scorer from last year’s Big 12 championships, notched two points for the Cyclones with a seventh place finish in the 1,000-meter run.

The Cyclones host the NCAA Qualifier on Saturday. The meet will be the last chance for athletes to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Indoor championships that take place March 10-14 in Fayetteville, Ark.
