Medical incident occurs at Marathon

A medical disturbance occurred during Dance Marathon on Saturday night, but neither student volunteers nor representatives of the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital released details, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

The incident resulted in an ambulance being summoned to the Memorial Union, where the event was held, but what happened after the ambulance got there is unclear.

An emergency room technician at Mary Greeley Medical Center said he was unaware of any incidents related to Dance Marathon when asked for comment Saturday night.

Lt. Darin Van Ryswyk of Iowa State’s Department of Public Safetyalso declined to comment, specifically because of the medical nature of the incident.

“There was a medical incident at the Union, and the ambulance responded,” Van Ryswyk said.

Morgan Rohrback, assistant director of the Children’s Miracle Network, said “the important thing is that the overarching event is the wonderful thing these college students have done for hospitalized kids.”

Rohrback would not say whether the person involved in the medical incident was an ISU student or one of the children – or relatives of the children – receiving services from the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, but Rohrback did say not to worry, and “everything’s in the right hands.”
