MUSCATINE &#8212 A 2-month-old boy was in critical condition after allegedly being injured by a Muscatine woman who planned to adopt him.

Melanie Leathers Addington, 29, faces a charge of child endangerment resulting in serious injury. Police say the boy was in her care when she shook and slammed him at her home on Sept. 5, causing permanent brain injury.

Muscatine County Attorney Gary R. Allison said the infant was in critical condition at University Hospitals in Iowa City. He also said Addington had plans to adopt the boy.

Addington was being held in the Muscatine County jail under $10,000-cash only bond.

If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.
