Police warn students of dangers of public intox

Drinking and driving isn’t the only way to get in trouble with alcohol.

Many students forget that public intoxication is another way to get a free trip to the Story County Jail.

“Being intoxicated in public is illegal in Iowa, even though in some states it’s not,” said ISU Police Cmdr. Gene Deisinger.

Deisinger said students shouldn’t just be worried about breaking the law by being drunk in public, they should also worry about their safety and the safety of others.

There will be a few more officers on patrol for the first few weekends of class, Deisinger said.

“Another issue we struggle with is minors in bars or minors with the possession of alcohol,” Deisinger said.

He also said the ones who get in trouble are usually those who present volatile behavior on the streets.
