Thompson offers his plan for Iraq war

Presidential candidate and former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, R-Wis., finished his 99-county tour of Iowa Tuesday night, addressing the Iowa Christian Alliance in Clive about his plan to resolve the situation in Iraq.

“I am somewhat concerned in Iraq that Republicans want to keep doing the same thing and expect a different result,” Thompson said. “I’m worried about the Democrats who want to wave the flag of truce and back out without stabilizing the country.”

Thompson said he would require the Iraqi government to vote on whether they wanted the American forces to remain in the country.

“We are accused by the world that we are invaders and occupiers. We are there, but we should only be there by the request of the Iraqi government,” he said.

Thompson said that if the Iraqi government voted to keep American troops in the country, it should help pay for the war, both financially and militarily.

“If they don’t want us there, they vote that way and we should redeploy our forces someplace else,” he said. “They have 150,000 individual troops in uniform and those individuals should be fighting with us.”

Thompson also said Iraqis should help pay, using the income made from oil sales. He said it was “unfair” that American taxpayers pay for everything.

He said the country is made up of 18 territories and suggested that they begin to govern as states to help solve some of the problems of violence between the Shiite and Sunnis.

Thompson said that, under his plan, Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish territories would elect a government based on which denomination holds the majority. He said that the people will move to whatever territory has their own majority over time.

Thompson also said he would split the oil revenues three ways.

Under his proposal, one third would go to the federal government, one third to the state governments and the last third to “every man, woman and child.”

“They will build businesses and create opportunities and have a stake in their government and economy,” he said.

To help boost the American image around the world, Thompson said he would allow two U.S. hospital naval ships, USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort, to sail around the world with young doctors helping people of other nations.

“It would be a public relations bonanza for America, but also keep down the hatred,” he said.

On the subject of health care in the United States, Thompson said less than 10 percent of the $2 trillion that is spent on healthcare is used to keep people out of the hospital.

He said he wants a system based on wellness and prevention rather than one based on sickness and disease. Thompson said this sort of system would work much better and save billions of dollars while making the country healthier.

Thompson said he wants only individuals who earn straight ‘A’s’ to get into medical school to make the treatment better.

To pay for the uninsured, Thompson said he would make the tax system less complicated, which he said, would save $135 billion.

The ICA, which does not endorse candidates, held the forum in which Thompson, who has just finished a 20-day tour of all 99 Iowa counties, spoke with the group’s activists.
