New hot dog venture extends business hours

There is a new place in Campustown to get your hot dog fix.

The Dog House, 114 Welch Ave., opened during Veishea this year and is now going to expand its menu and hours.

“We had a rocky start during the first part of Veishea, but it got better and got good feedback,” said Lynn Lloyd, owner of The Dog House.

Lloyd, also the owner of the vending machine facilities of AutoVend, said she had been planning for about four months on what to put on the small patio land beside AutoVend.

Right now, the place offers hot dogs, beef hot dogs, Polish sausages and the usual works that can go on a hot dog or sausage.

To drink, it offers Red Bull and Monster energy drinks, otherwise AutoVend provides soft drinks, as well as chips and desserts.

“We have a very good product,” Lloyd said. “[AutoVend] and The Dog House compliment each other.”

Lloyd also said the business tries to work within a college budget with the price of food items, ranging from $2 to $3.50.

In the next week or two, The Dog House plans to add barbecue beef and chicken to the menu.

Nick Martin, manager of Battle’s Barbeque, 218 Welch Ave., said “Battle’s has been a staple in Ames for years. Any competition is good, though.”

This week, The Dog House expanded its hours to 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We wanted to cater to the lunch crowd,” Lloyd said.

The Dog House is also open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. for the weekend crowd and offers a place to eat after the bars close down.

Lloyd said The Dog House should be open year-round, unless it starts to get really cold.

“Everyone who has had one says they’ll be back for more,” Lloyd said.
