LETTER: What about those ‘friendly’ regimes?

In President Bush’s inaugural address, he spoke of his goal to “end tyranny” throughout the world. However, this raises the question of what the administration plans to do about the many regimes in the world today that are authoritarian but still maintain close ties to the United States. Will these governments still be seen as friendly? When is authoritarianism ever friendly? This distinction reveals the fact that U.S. foreign policy is not guided by human or civil rights issues, but by how “friendly” governments are toward U.S. policy. What, then, does this say about U.S. foreign policy?
