LETTER: Hy-Vee could kill a Cyclone tradition
December 7, 2004
In 1977, a trophy was created to add excitement to the rivalry between the Hawkeyes and Cyclones. The Cy-Hawk Trophy marked the spirit of Iowa’s intra-state rivalry. The Cyclones will have to wait till next football season to try and reclaim the Cy-Hawk Trophy, but it might not exist by then. The match between Iowa and Iowa State now has a new name involved — Hy-Vee signed a four-year sponsor of a Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series and, as a result, the Cy-Hawk Trophy may no longer be called just the Cy-Hawk Trophy. The creators of the trophy are fighting to keep Cy-Hawk on the original trophy. I don’t believe that Hy-Vee should be included in a football tradition that has been going on since 1977.
The rivalry may still be the same, but there is a time to have sponsors recognized and a time to just keep traditions alive. When the trophy was created, its purpose was to give the players one more thing to fight over besides pride.
With Hy-Vee carved in the trophy, I believe the original meaning would be lost.
