LETTER: Dorm room posts lack common sense
September 30, 2004
The Sept. 29 article on dorm room postings sounds like a typical college student tired of the constant struggle to understand English from another culture. This issue was brought up by my girlfriend a couple days ago, but I never thought it would reach the Daily. What did he expect enrolling into a diverse university?
I am sorry if he can’t tolerate diversity, but our society thrives off new ideas and foreign cultures. Every day you will see at least see one product that was made from another country because other countries make it cheaper and faster than us, and I am sure you will see our products in their country as well. You don’t hear consumers complaining or the CEO stopping their business because they can’t communicate. They tolerate the ambiguity and make lots of money. Look at companies like Microsoft, Nike, AT&T and so on.
These companies have gotten over the language barrier and are now making billions of dollars. From the immigrant side, it probably says the same thing when we are trying to enter their country, but they get over it and cater to Americans and make money from tourism, exchange programs and more. Everyone is going to have their gripes on campus, but in the large view of things, everyone is catering to someone, one way or another.
