LETTER: Don’t delay, treat ADHD today
October 13, 2004
In regards to Dan Slatterly’s article about ADHD and ADD medications, in high school I was a straight “A” student, valedictorian and all-around smart student.
Things changed when I got to college. I would study for hours, do really well on the homework and OK on the quizzes.
My fellow classmates would even come to me for help on their assignments. Unfortunately, I would always do poorly on my tests.
I thank God for leading me to the Disability Resource building on campus.
At first I thought ADD and ADHD were totally bogus and a way out of taking responsibility for trying hard and being diligent.
Not until I failed an entire semester did I start to even think that something was wrong.
My sophomore year, I was diagnosed with ADD and an acute form of dyslexia.
I may be a rare case, but I know that since I was offered medication and services, my grades have dramatically improved. I also know that ADD is widely misdiagnosed, and maltreated.
I wish I would have looked into the DR office sooner.
Now I must work my tail end off to simply bring my GPA to a 3.0.
