LETTER: President Geoffroy defends free speech
October 12, 2004
It is well-known that there are a lot of people upset about Michael Moore’s upcoming visit to Iowa State. We know there is a lot of pressure coming from these groups that want Moore’s lecture to be canceled and that some supporters may cut off financial support to Iowa State because of the lecture.
What many students probably don’t know is that most of this pressure is put on our own President Gregory Geoffroy. Many people have complained to him about this lecture and threatened to cut off all financial gifts because he alone has the power to cancel the lecture.
To me, this seems like a tremendous amount of pressure and stress to handle. Our president has made the choice not to cancel the lecture because he believes in academic freedom. This means that students have the choice to learn about whatever they wish, and since it was the choice of the lectures committee to bring Michael Moore here, he supports them.
I think we all need to have a lot of appreciation for our president. Though I do not support Michael Moore at all, I do support any choice made by President Geoffroy because I know that he always tries to do what’s best for all of us as ISU students.
