LETTER: U.S. goes too far in pushing religion
September 22, 2004
While struggling with communism, we pushed an image of religious freedom and establishment. We added “under God” to our Pledge of Allegiance to emphasize this point.
Repression of religion eventually gave Soviet Union citizens a reason to rebel.
Though the enemy has changed, we have not changed our image.
We continue to limit stem cell research and ban gay marriage. With these and other laws based upon the Bible, what position are we in to tell governments not to repress based on other religious texts?
Victims living under today’s theocracies thirst for a justice based on unalienable rights and not religious dogma. We must provide an example of this justice. We must provide a reason for the religiously oppressed to fight on our side.
