LETTER: Security was a must with Bush twins

On Sept. 14, Shyam Goswami wrote a letter to the Daily about his concerns of being turned away before the Bush daughters’ visit to Iowa State. In his second paragraph, he mentioned that this event was by “invite only, and he wanted on the list.” Shyam, I was on the list, and I earned this invite by volunteering when I have time to the re-election campaign.

I felt honored to be there and enjoyed the event. I wish you could have been there. I am sorry for the feelings you experienced as you were turned away.

Your treatment is not uncommon and should not be unexpected. Looking into bags and on your undershirt is necessary to prevent anti-Bush propaganda into the event. This event was to be a Republican event with a celebratory mood. Any protesting within the event would ruin the spirit of this “invite only” event for all those invited.

Due to you showing up late and not being on the list, you have to realize that that looks a little shady to those involved in the event security. E-mailing Louis was a great idea in an attempt to be placed on the list. Louis also received 100 e-mails from those who were told to RSVP. In an election year and due to heightened security for the president and his family, I would expect any citizen to understand the importance of what you went through.

From all of the Republicans on campus, we would like to thank you for your interest in the Bush daughters’ visit. We hope that you attend some of the College Republicans’ meetings, where we can fill you in on what was said at the event. I look forward to seeing you at some future events. Thanks again!
