LETTER: Libertarians should consider these views

In Wednesday’s issue of the Daily an insert was included touting the virtues of the Libertarian Party. While we respect the Libertarian Party for its principled approach, we take issue with some of its views.

On page one of their insert was a section advocating decentralization of political power. We agree that political power should be decentralized; however, we also realize the danger of economic centralization.

The history of the United States has taught us that unchecked capitalism leads to gross abuses of human rights, including child labor and 14-hour workdays for starvation wages.

Even in today’s slightly regulated economy, 45 million Americans are without health care, even though they live in the richest nation in the world.

Albert Einstein stated eloquently that “Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands the result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital, the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society.”

We believe that instead of making cosmetic changes that maintain the status quo, we should strive for the creation of a new system based on cooperation and collaboration where power is held by the masses.
