The ISU Crew Club will try to continue its winning streak against Iowa Sunday in the annual Cy-Hawk Regatta. The race will be held at noon at the Des Moines Rowing Club on the Des Moines River.

During the fall season, the ISU squad swept Iowa 11 times.

“We’ve got a pretty good feeling that we can beat them again. We beat them every time in the fall,” said Matt Solnitzky, junior in economics and vice president of the crew club.

The winner of the race receives a trophy that was created by the Iowa team two years ago. The trophy has the Iowa emblem on one side and the ISU emblem on the other.

The 2,000-meter race will consist of four-man boats raced by both teams.

In normal years, the teams would run eight-man boats, but due to a lack of participants on the Iowa side, the rowers will run four this year.

“We’ve got to have a good strong start. We need to get ahead early and stay ahead,” Solnitzky said.

The ISU Crew Club gained some momentum last weekend against Augustana. The club ran two boats in a total of six races and finished first and second in every race. Two races were men’s four-man races. Two were women’s four-person races, and two races were run with eight-person boats mixed with men and women.

The number of teams competing depends on the race. A lot of the competitions consist of two teams, but the club will also be in races with as many as 20 boats. The club mostly competes in the Iowa area, but it also plans to travel to Wisconsin and Illinois this spring.

Anybody who wants to join the club can. First-year members will be put in a novice group. After a member’s first year, he or she will be upgraded to varsity, where the team will use up to three different boats for men and women.
