CDs, not bombs, dropped on troops

North Grand Mall and 105.1 KCCQ are seeking CDs collecting dust in people’s collections to help entertain troops overseas.

“Operation CD Drop,” co-sponsored by North Grand Mall and KCCQ, will send donated and new CDs, DVDs and batteries to Iowa troops in Iraq and other countries to help pass their time, said Jamie Matthews, program director of 105.1 KCCQ.

Nicole Peterson, marketing director for North Grand Mall, said the donations should reach troops in time for the holiday season.

She said people may have differing opinions about the war, but it is important to support those serving the United States.

“We have to remember those who aren’t having Thanksgiving dinner with their family,” she said.

Mary Jane Bastiaans, customer service representative for North Grand Mall, said the donations will give the men and women something to watch and listen to while serving overseas.

The customer service center in the North Grand Mall is the collecting center for all of the donated items.

For every donation, the North Grand Mall will give 100 points to “Malls4Schools,” a program that helps the school of the donor’s choice, Bastiaans said.

Matthews said people who donate items will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win MP3 players and portable CD players.

North Grand Mall is working with the Air Force Reserves within the mall to help distribute donations in time for the holidays, she said.

Operation CD Drop began Nov. 17 and will continue through Nov. 28.
