Before the doors close for good at Fisher-Nickell residence hall in May, the president of the university and the vice president for student affairs must approve the decision.

John Shertzer, residence life coordinator for the Department of Residence, said President Gregory Geoffroy and Thomas Hill, vice president for Student Affairs, will make the final decision about whether to have students living in Fisher-Nickell residence hall after May.

Shertzer said he believes the decision will be made soon.

Although the decision to stop students from living in the Fisher-Nickell residence hall will be made by university officials, the Board of Regents will decide whether the building can be demolished.

“The Board of Regents only needs to approve if the building is decomissioned — at this time, we have not asked for that to happen,” Shertzer said.

Barbara Boose, communications specialist for the Iowa Board of Regents, said the Board of Regents examines a number of factors when deciding whether to approve demolition of a building, including the institution’s capital plans, what the issues are, if the building is being utilized and if there are plans to renovate or rebuild.
