Spring Fashion Show is this weekend

After months of hard work students will be able to strut their stuff this weekend.

The Textile and Clothing Department’s annual Spring Fashion Show will begin tonight at 7 in Fisher Theater. The show will also be held at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Elizabeth Gardner, co-producer of the fashion show, said this year’s theme, Mosaic 2001, is a culmination of different ideas.

“Our theme is pulling together a variety of different ideas from different generations and races,” said Gardner, junior in apparel merchandising, design and production.

The designs will be an expression of the variety in today’s culture.

“Mosaic 2001 also represents the diversity in the TC student’s designs, and it fits overall with popular culture in America today in expressing diversity through film and art,” said Brooke Brindley, co-producer of Mosaic 2001.

This is the 19th year the TC department will present the fashion show, featuring the designs of 31 students.

Design categories include casual wear, children’s wear, experimental design, collections and accessories.

“Our goal for the show is to promote all designers in the TC department,” Gardner said. “It is a good chance to showcase their work.”

Student’s work will be judged by four professionals in the apparel industry, she said, and each design category will have first, second and third place winners.

There is also a “Best of Show” award given to one designer.

Gardner said winners will receive cash prizes from local Ames businesses in addition to the awards.

A majority of students in the TC department are working to put on the student-run fashion show this year.

“We have around 50 students working on the show,” said Brindley, junior in apparel merchandising, design and production.

There are 17 director positions for the show and each director has a committee, she said.

Gardner said planning for Mosaic 2001 started last semester but most of the work for the show will be done this week.

“I anticipate I will put in 35 to 40 hours this week working on the show,” Brindley said.

Preparations have already consumed most of the week.

“We are eating, breathing and sleeping the fashion show this week,” said Tina Wagner, co-director of set production for Mosaic 2001 and senior in apparel design.

Tickets for the fashion show are $8 Friday, the opening night, and $10 Saturday, where awards will be presented.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster box offices, www.ticketmaster.com, the Scheman box office or by phone at 233-1888.
