Letter to the editor: Daily looking to get a rise
September 25, 2000
The Daily editorial board knew they’d get a rise out of the greek system with their “In Our Opinion” on Sept. 26, and in my case they did. Don’t get me wrong, I do not condone the actions of the two members of Theta Xi, but this isn’t the issue. The board used this to show the greek system in a negative light. Greek systems across the country take more bad press than they do good. We’re used to it. However, we enjoy our kudos too. The greek system here at Iowa State does the lion share of the labor that puts on Homecoming and Veishea. We do a staggering amount of community service and run philanthropies for a wide range of causes. Most of it without any public knowledge. I just can’t understand why so many of you hate the greeks. Is it that we dress like preppies? I don’t, unless jeans and a sweatshirt is preppie. Is it that we look like we’re having too much fun? We are. We enjoy greek life and want those of you out there who think we are an elitist group to come and join. We are always looking for interesting people to make our community more diverse. Lastly, why is there always this us vs. them mentality between greeks and dorm residents? Those of you in the dorms, on the whole ,don’t know what being greek is, so please don’t knock it. I have lived in the dorms. I liked it. I still have a lot of friends who live there. I like the greek system better and I have a feeling if some of you out there gave it a try, you’d like it too.
