Letter to the Editor:Not a member of Cuffs, just trying something new

Sam Engwall

I am the guy who was tied up on the front page of the Daily a few days ago. I would first and foremost like to publicly state that I am not a member of Cuffs nor do I intend to become one. I was just bored at Club Fest, and thought I would try something new. Is there really anything wrong with that? In response to a few of the recent letters to the editor, two readers described their reactions to the article and ultimately to the formation of a BDSM club on campus. One reader stated that he reached for a dictionary and found the definitions of what BDSM stood for horrific, and the other almost lost his breakfast after looking at the front page. I would like to respond to each by formally telling them to grow up. There are a lot of different people on this campus that have different interests, hobbies and lifestyles from yours; each are entailed to form their own club if they wish. If you disagree with the lifestyle Cuffs members live or find their actions oppose your personal ethics, then you don’t have to be a member. That goes for any one of the tons of clubs here on campus. I think that it is great that an organization like Cuffs was accepted by the university. This truly shows just how open-minded Iowa State can be. It is time for some of the students at Iowa State to follow suit and open their minds to people and organizations different from what they are used to. Sam Engwall
