The Kansas Jayhawks proved to be too strong for the ISU volleyball team on Saturday night, sweeping the Cyclones 15-7, 15-6, 15-11. The win raised the Jayhawks record to 11-2 and 2-2 in the Big 12 while the loss dropped ISU’s record to 2-9 on the season and 0-4 in conference action. “I thought [Kansas] played a good game,” said ISU Head Coach Linda Grensing. “I thought they were pretty consistent, pretty scrappy through what they did.” Iowa State came out aggressive in game one taking a 5-3 lead before Kansas rallied to regain the edge and never looked back cruising to a 15-7 win in the first game. Both teams were helped out by a combined six serving errors in the first game. “I was really impressed with [Kansas’s] defense,” said freshman outside hitter Steph Suntken. Suntken came in as a sub in game one for junior Nanette Allen and finished up the remainder of the match on the court. The second game in the match was fairly one-sided as Kansas held the majority of the momentum throughout cruising to the 15-6 win. “I thought they dug up a lot of things. Everything went right up to the setter,” Suntken said. “You have to give them a lot of credit. They played great defense.” The third game proved to be the most competitive and exciting game for the Cyclones. Kansas held a 10-3 lead before Iowa State rallied to score five straight points. Iowa State came within a point of tying the match and fought off three match points before Kansas was able to capitalize on the fourth match point, take the game victory and finish off the match 15-11. “I really was impressed with the way we battled back, and that’s just what I told the kids,” Coach Grensing said. “I liked the passion that they played with and the way they really persisted and played as a team in the last segment of the game.” Sophomore rightside hitter Mandi Harms came off the bench in the third set adding a little spark tallying four kills, two digs and a block on her way to hitting for a .333 percentage from the floor. Leading the offensive attack for the Cyclones was senior Stacy Nicks. Nicks recorded 10 kills for a .304 hitting percentage. The Cyclones continued their strong blocking attack gaining 10 blocks to the Jayhawks five. Nicks also led defensively totaling two blocks. “The third game felt great,” said Sunkten who added five kills and five digs in the loss. “I thought we had a lot of intensity. Things didn’t always go well, but yet we came back and made the best out of that. We got double digits [in scoring] which is one of our main goals, so I thought that was good.” Iowa State will be on the road Wednesday night in a Big 12 match versus Oklahoma at the OU fieldhouse. Grensing is optimistic about the Cyclones chances vs the Sooners. “They’re a team somewhere in between Missouri and Kansas. I think they’ll be interesting,” said Grensing. “They’ve got a real good middle who provides a lot of offense for them, so the key will be if we can kind of keep their first contacts out of her reach so that she can’t get up and be effective in the middle.” Suntken said that the Cyclones will just keep fighting trying to come up with their first conference win of the season. “Linda [Grensing] just talked about how these are very doable games for us. We just need to keep going and sometime we’re going to get the win,” she said.
