Campus to become stage for indie film

Trailers, cameras and set props will be rolling onto the ISU campus in early April for the filming of “The Private Public,” an independent movie about the power of documentary as well as the difficulties of college life.

Chad Calek and Justin Holstein, the film’s screenwriters, first conceived the idea for the film while they were hitting the books at Iowa State.

“I wanted to bring back the college theme in an era where the aren’t many [movies with a college theme] right now,” Calek said.

Calek said he wants the movie to show the hardships of college life.

“The goal is to carry over the absolute truth in dialogue and content to really show the difficult times and formidable years [of college life] and also to show the humor and friendships that develop,” he said.

The film will feature former MTV’s “The Real World” cast members David Burns (Seattle), Jason Cornwell (Boston) and Glen Naessens (Los Angeles). They will all make their acting debuts in the film.

“We had an opportunity to see who these people were via the media and cast them based on who they are,” said Dana Altman, the film’s director and the grandson of famed director Robert Altman. “The characters they are in reality correspond with who they are creatively in the picture.”

Curt Smith, former Tears for Fears singer, will also star in the film.

ISU students and staff will be able to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of “Private Public.”

“Since we don’t have a huge budget, [we plan] to utilize as much local talent as we can,” Altman said.

Calek said he understands it is rough to break into the film business, and he said he hopes “Public” will give students an opportunity to get a taste of the celluloid world.

“The most important thing is that students can get involved where they wouldn’t otherwise,” he said.

The Internet company One for The Road will broadcast the first week of filming for a live audience on the Internet.

The actual shoot is scheduled to last 22 days, and the premiere is scheduled for the fall. More information is available on the “Private Public” Web site at www.theprivatepublic.com.
