After a three-week campaign, students of Iowa State elected Matt Craft and Garrett Toay as next year’s Government of the Student Body president and vice president.

The 1999 election results, which were announced in front of about 100 people in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union Thursday night, showed that a total of 1,480 votes were cast, or about 6 percent of the student body.

Craft and Toay secured their new positions with 884 votes; Studenski and Robert came in second at 261 votes. Write-in candidates Justin Hattan and Jeremy Davis were third with 211 votes.

Toay said he was excited and relieved.

“I’m relieved that it was a good, clean race. Everyone was deserving,” he said. “However, it was nerve-wracking until the end.”

Craft said he was looking forward to his new position.

“I’m really excited. We’ll be coming back Monday from break, and we’ll be getting to work on forming a new cabinet and getting ready for the next year,” he said.

Davis said although his slate did not win, he was happy with the results.

“It was a good turnout, and I am really pleased to see Craft and Toay win,” he said. “I think they will do a good job for the students at ISU.”

Studenski said he also was satisfied with the results.

“I am very glad it was a clean race,” he said. “One thing we showed in this race was that two people in GSB can disagree with each other but still remain friendly, and back when I was in senate, that wasn’t always the case. Also, Craft is a great guy.”

Studenski said the campaign sparked some healthy debate.

“It also raised issues during the campaign that wouldn’t have been raised otherwise,” he said.

Gregory Tew, engineering, said he felt the executive candidates endured a good race.

“It was clean and competitive, and a lot of good issues were raised, too,” he said.

Craft said parts of the campaign were stressful but he felt the outcome was worth the effort.

“The snowstorm on Monday really freaked us out — we didn’t know what to expect from everyone,” he said. “Having Justin and Ben running a really clean race helped out a lot. It was easier on everybody because now you can concentrate on what you’re doing and not on what everyone else is doing.”

Craft said he is looking forward to receiving feedback from the students.

“I want the students to give us a call and get to know us right away because now we are going to be working for them as their representatives next year,” he said.
