Women get strong play from Welle in road rout of Tigers

The Cyclones continued to take their aggressions out on the Big 12 conference Saturday, hammering the Missouri Tigers 80-54 in Columbia.

After back-to-back losses at Texas Tech and Clemson, Iowa State has exploded for two consecutive 20-point wins over former tormentors Nebraska and Missouri.

Still without standout contributor Desiree Francis, the Cyclones relied Saturday on a balanced attack featuring five players in double figures for the second straight game.

Angie Welle led the charge for ISU, scoring 16 points and nabbing a dozen rebounds as the Cyclones overcame an early 5-0 deficit to lead 39-27 at the half.

Missouri’s last lead of the game came with 12:20 remaining in the first half as Julie Helm hit a jump shot to take an 11-10 lead.

The Cyclones responded with a 21-6 run that all but put the game away.

The much taller ISU team dominated the Tigers on the boards throughout the contest, pulling down 44 rebounds to MU’s 33.

Megan Taylor equaled Welle with 12 boards, six more than any Missouri player.

After the break, the Cyclones only increased their lead, opening the half with a 19-4 run.

Taylor scored eight of her 14 points, including a pair of three pointers, during that stretch, handing the Cyclones a 58-31 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining.

The closest the Tigers would come the remainder of the evening would be 19 points down.

Stacy Frese, coming off an eight-for-eight performance behind the arc against the Cornhuskers, hit on only two of nine three pointers at Columbia and finished the game with 12 points.

Tracy Gahan and Erica Haugen rounded out the double-digit Cyclone scoring, contributing 13 and 12 points respectively.

The Cyclones continued to harass their opponents at the charity stripe, hitting 22 of 29 free throws.

Gahan, Haugen and Frese were all four-for-four from the line.

By comparison, Missouri shot only 13 free throws and made only nine.

The victory for Iowa State was only its second in 20 tries at the Hearnes Center and only its seventh in 46 career meetings with the Tigers.

The Cyclones will now return home to face Oklahoma State on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
