The 1998 National Forum for Agriculture, sponsored in part by two Iowa State organizations, is scheduled for today and Tuesday at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines.

The ninth-annual event, named “Hello Dolly: The Biotechnology Revolution for Agriculture Has Arrived” is expected to attract more than 500 agriculturists. The forum will focus on national issues related to agriculture across the United States.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and ISU President Martin Jischke are among a number of special guest speakers for the forum. In addition, scientists from universities nationwide and various representatives from such agribusiness giants as Asgrow Seed Company and Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. will give presentations.

ISU speakers include Prem Paul, associate dean of research for the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Diane Birt, chairwoman of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

The three key themes, according to forum chairman Steve Zumbach, will include new biotechnology products, the accessibility and form of the expected products and which communities will benefit from the biotechnology revolution in agriculture.

“Agriculture is on the cusp of great economic growth because of biotechnology,” Zumbach said in a press release. “It is not unthinkable that the biotechnology age will surpass the computer age in its impact on the world.”

The forum is organized by the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at ISU, ISU Extension and the Food and Agriculture Council of the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce.

Today’s forum begins with registration at 7 a.m., followed by a list of speakers and a noon luncheon. Following afternoon sessions is a Pride of Iowa reception at 4:30 p.m.

The forum will continue on Tuesday with a 7:30 breakfast and sessions lasting until noon.

Fees are $50 for students, $145 for other attendees. Preregistration is not required.
