Multicultural center

John Ohlfest

If ignorance breeds arrogance, then we have plenty of both at the present moment. I have read that the possibility of a so-called “multicultural center” is being considered for construction at ISU. I had to stop and ask myself if I was back in the time of segregation or if I was just crazy. If we build a building for minorities only, how is that different than the old restaurants that had the words “whites only” printed on the door? People scream for equal time, equal treatment and equal rights.

This proposed building has nothing to do with equality and everything to do with special treatment. Can you imagine the outrage of people if someone proposed a white cultural building? There would be such an uproar that the gods would hear it. I wish we could get past the notion of every culture having to have their own history month, their own holidays and their own buildings. All buildings on a truly equal campus should not be for a specific cultural background, but for anyone who wants to use it. After all, we are all part of the same race — the human race. I doubt this will be printed because it may stir a few people up … what is the old saying? The truth hurts.
