The Iowa State gymnasts showed their talent and determination by narrowly defeating Missouri on Friday night.

When the meet totals were announced, ISU came out on top with a 193.750. Missouri scored 192.525.

The Cyclones dominated on vault with sophomore Kelly Cherwien finishing first tallying a score of 9.8, while senior Heidi Kirt, sophomore Sarah Stayberg and freshman Angie Umbaugh all tied for third place with scores of 9.675.

On the floor, ISU also finished well, with all five of the Cyclones showing strong routines. Senior Kayo Merritt tied with freshman Jessica Smith for first with scores of 9.875. Senior Libby Bell took third with a score of 9.825.

This final rotation propelled ISU past Missouri to win the meet.

On the uneven bars, Michelle Hladky took top honors with a solid routine scoring a 9.875. Sophomore Kelli More finished in second place and junior Sarah Hodgson rounded out the top three.

ISU also controlled the balance beam competition with placing More in first, Merritt in second and Umbaugh in third.

Merritt said the team is still a little shaky, and there is room for improvement. She also said physically the team is ready, but they need to come together mentally.

Bell said the team members had some really good routines, but also made some mistakes they shouldn’t have. She said the squad has to work on putting everything together in order to be at its full potential.
