A Daily sabbatical

Jared Wacker and Peter Thompson

Prospective lawyers are told not to ask witnesses questions to which they do not know the answers.

On Thursday, Nov. 13, Shuva Rahim submitted a letter in response to a previous letter regarding the quality of the Daily written by Evan Mortenson. In it, she asked, “Tell me, Evan Mortenson, do you have the drive, the ambition, the time, the energy and the stress level to handle a full class load and work up to 40 hours a week at a student newspaper as do a handful of Daily employees?”

We’ve had the pleasure of knowing and performing with Evan in the ISU Wind Ensemble throughout this semester, and we believe his criticisms cannot be so easily dismissed.

Not only does he have a full class load and a job in Orange City, which he maintains by computer, he also has the responsibility of supporting his family of a wife and two daughters. In spite of all this, he remains at the top of his aerospace engineering class and manages to attend Wind Ensemble rehearsals and performances.

Taking a semester to write for the Daily would be more of a sabbatical than anything else for Evan, and judging by the quality of his letter, that would be the greatest thing that could ever happen to the Daily.
