The Des Moines Art Center is showing its 46th annual Iowa Artists Exhibition through September 7.

The exhibition showcases artwork in many different media, including paint, ceramics, pencil, sculpture and photography.

Over 240 artists submitted work and 59 were chosen for display by Louis Grachos, director/curator of SITE Santa Fe, a museum of international contemporary art. Thirty of the artists were new to the Iowa Artists Exhibition.

Michael Danoff, director of the Des Moines Art Center, said in a press release that Grachos had to make his impartial selection on artistic eye alone since he is not familiar with art in Iowa.

Included with the exhibition is the “A Week with Iowa Artists” program which began Monday and will continue through Friday.

Iowa artists Barbara Moss, Mac Hornecker and Joan Soppe will discuss their lives and art with programs, which are free and open to the public during the week.

Moss, an Iowa City native, hosts a week-long camp for children to teach about relief printmaking.

Hornecker, a professor of art from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, will speak at a brown-bag lunch at noon on Thursday.

Also, Soppe, an artist from Cedar Rapids, will have a discussion about artists’ books and have demonstration on photocopy transfers.

Admission to Hornecker’s and Soppe’s discussions are free. Preregistration is encouraged.

The Iowa Artists Exhibition is funded by The Des Moines Register, the Peter H. and E. Lucille Gaass Kuyper Foundation, Natalie and William Brenton, KPMG Peat Marwick, Norwest Financial, Inc., and Brenton Banks, Inc.

The Des Moines Art Center is located at 4700 Grand Avenue. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 children and seniors, and hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
