Andy Lashier and Liza Lucas will lead the senior class into the 1997-98 school year as president and vice president, respectively, of the Senior Class Council.

Lashier, a junior in finance from Marshalltown, and Lucas, a junior in history from Letts, received 125 votes in Wednesday’s election. Their opponents, John Hobson, a junior in marketing and Phil Lockhart, a junior in aerospace engineering, received 69 votes.

Current SCC President Brian Grattan delivered the news on Thursday to Lashier’s door at about 5 p.m.

Lucas said she and Lashier were “elated.”

“I’m very excited,” she said. “I’m actually surprised. I thought the race would be very close. Hobson and Lockhart had a very good campaign.”

Lucas said she and Lashier look forward to improving the SCC for the new school year.

Areas to improve, she said, include publicizing the recruitment of council members and promoting social events. “The best way would be to go out and talk to different groups. We want to say ‘give us your best leaders.'”

Lockhart wished Lashier and Lucas luck in the coming year. “Andy and Liza are two very dedicated and hard-working people,” he said. “Their combined efforts will ensure a successful and productive council.”

Duties of the SCC executives include arranging Senior Week and other senior class activities, overseeing council committees and purchasing the senior class gift.

Lucas said she and Lashier will aim to steer the majority of fund-raising for the gift away from seniors and toward other groups. “We’re looking at fund-raisers from other activities,” she said. “To rely solely on donations is a stress on seniors.”

Another goal for next year, she said, is to enhance education possibilities for seniors. She said seminars for financial planning, money management and higher education are “the best way to prepare seniors.”

The 194 voters is less than 1 percent of the combined total of juniors and seniors eligible to vote. About 367 voters turned out in the last SCC election.

“This was not a good representation of the senior class,” Grattan said. He said he planned to recommend either a selection or an interviewing process for future SCC elections.
