Survey says?

Kel Munger

There are plenty of complaints to be made about the Daily’s recent survey, but by far the most obvious point of contention is the editorial conclusion that: “According to telephone survey, students don’t think racial tension is a major campus problem.”

With 7 percent of respondents describing the atmosphere as “very tense” and 62 percent describing it as “somewhat tense,” for a total of 69 percent of respondents who think there is some level of racial tension on campus, how in the world can you conclude that students don’t think racial tension is a major campus problem?

The survey would seem to indicate exactly the opposite: that an overwhelming number of students think racial tension is a problem.

I’ll save my complaints about putting an issue of racial justice, such as the naming of Catt Hall, to a “majority rules” test — which results in the tyranny of the majority — for another time.
