Lee Corso can be quiet now

I told myself I wasn’t going to talk about football this week, but something very exciting happened this past weekend. That’s right, Iowa State nailed another win. And also, if I didn’t write about football, I would probably get yelled at by most of the public for not mentioning one of the Cyclones’ greatest accomplishments so far this season.

The Cyclones pulled through Saturday a little roughed up, but on top against the Missouri Tigers, 45-31. Last year, the Tigers beat us 45-31. A coincidence? I think not. And for all you number crunchers out there, this is the first time that Iowa State has won two games back to back since 1989. That was seven years ago! 1989 was also ISU’s last winning season.

This was a very intense on the edge of your seat battle down to the final minutes of the game, and all 44,941 men, women, and children of all ages went home happy. To say the least, this game definitely restored my faith in the Cyclones.

Cyclones are now 2-2 for the season, and 1-0 in the Big 12.

Troy Davis. The best in college football. Looks like Missouri was able to contain you, holding you to under 400 yards for the game (just a little sarcasm folks). A total of 378 yards in one game. ONE GAME. That ranks third highest ever. EVER. Smashing the Cyclones’ previous record, HIS personal record, by 76 yards. The four touchdowns were like icing on the cake. Spectators definitely got their money’s worth.

It was a great sight, seeing the big runs for the end zone that Davis had. A 38 yard run in the third, and a 40 and a 30 yard run in the last quarter.

ESPN’s Lee Corso said that Davis would be held to under 100 yards for the game. What? Maybe held to under one hundred yards a quarter, but a game? What drug is this guy on? I can do a better job predicting a football game, and as most of my readers acknowledge, I don’t know a whole lot about the game of football.

And for all of you people keeping track of Troy’s total yards, he has 3,123 career yards rushing. He needs only 314 yards to beat Dexter Green’s long standing record at ISU.

Seven good kicks by Jamie Kohl, including a 27 yard field goal in the first quarter, getting our first points on the board, and an amazing touchdown play executed by Tyrone Watley and Todd Doxzon added to the win.

And now, to take a moment’s departure from last weekend’s game talk, what will the NCAA do with Tyrone Watley? If they have any sense and a little compassion, they will let him play another season.

Coach Dan McCarney is making an attempt to get one more year of eligibility for Watley because he sat out most of his second year at Pacific due to health problems, following a medical redshirt his first year. So try to slip in a little prayer somewhere in your daily regimen that Watley may demonstrate his talent for another season.

Iowa State’s next challenge is against Texas A&M. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. on Jack Trice Field. It’s going to be a tough game, but if the Cyclones play with the enthusiasm they possessed against the Missouri Tigers, I see another win for the ISU, and Davis will get the yards necessary to put him at the top of the ISU record books.
