’42nd Street’ to dance into Stephens

Receiving excellent reviews across the country, the Troika Organization’s production of 42nd Street, the musical that has been said to have brought tap together in its present form, will take the stage Saturday, Sept. 21 at C.Y. Stephens.

Directed by Tony Parise, whose broadway debut was as a performer in the original company of 42nd Street, the musical comedy began life as a 1933 Busby Berkely movie. It was adapted for the stage in 1980 by producer David Merrick and choreographer Gower Champion.

The story begins as Peggy Sawyer (Rebecca Christine Kupka), a young dancer from Pennsylvania, misses her audition for a part in Pretty Lady.

In all of the excitement, Sawyer leaves her purse behind at the studio. Fortunately, when she returns for her purse, she is asked to go out to lunch with members of the chorus line.

Sawyer’s connection with the other dancers lands her a spot in the chorus of Pretty Lady, famed Broadway director Julian Marsh’s (Robert Sheridan) last chance attempt at success. Leading lady Dorothy Brock’s (Michelle Felten) talent has deteriorated from her glory days but Marsh sacrifices stardom for a $100,000 investment from Brock’s lover on the grounds that Brock plays the lead.

Several dastardly acts later, one that involves Dorothy’s jealousy of Peggy and the breaking of Dorothy’s ankle, the show gets a replacement for the leading role. Small town dancer hits the big time as Peggy is chosen to replace Dorothy in the New York opening.

With a set full of Depression-era songs such as “We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “I Only Have Eyes for You” and “42nd Street”, fans of the panache music from the 1930s should not miss 42nd Street. Besides the upbeat music, the show boasts a multitude of talented dancers.

Parise has also choreographed Hello Dolly! starring Madeleine Kahn, Where’s Charley?, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Me and My Girl.

Tickets for the show are still available for $20 and $32 and are available through Ticketmaster at 233-1888. The quintessential backstage musical 42nd Street begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium.
