With four straight wins and a Preseason WNIT championship to start the season, the Iowa State women’s basketball team is rolling.

The Cyclones took the championship on Sunday after defeating another previously undefeated in then-No. 24 Miami at Hilton Coliseum, 75-52. In the game, the Cyclones used a stout defense to hold the Hurricanes to a season low in points and shooting percentage, including only 10 percent from three.

Throughout the Preseason WNIT, the Cyclones were led — as they usually are — by star senior Bridget Carleton. In the tournament’s four games, Carleton averaged 16.3 points, 12.0 and 6.0 assists on 41 percent shooting.

On top of that, Carleton also hit the game-winning shot and had a clutch block on the subsequent possession to secure a victory in the semi-finals against Auburn. For her efforts, Carleton was named Big 12 Player of the Week.

With 11 weekly Big 12 Conference accolades, success certainly isn’t unique for Carleton. What is unique, however, is the opportunity that she’ll have on Wednesday when the Cyclones face Eastern Michigan. For the game, the two teams will travel to Chatham, Ontario, Canada to play a neutral-site game in Carleton’s hometown.

Head coach Bill Fennelly has frequently mentioned his affinity for Carleton as a player and a person, and the neutral-site game is a way of honoring her for her contributions to the program.

Ordinarily, a team like Eastern Michigan, which plays in a mid-major conference, would travel to Hilton Coliseum for this early-season matchup. However, with Ypsilanti, Michigan, where the EMU is located, only an hour-and-a-half drive from Chatham, the Cyclones were able to work out a deal with Eastern Michigan to play the game in Carleton’s hometown.

Given its performance over the past 12 days, Iowa State should be favored heading into Wednesday’s game. With that being said, the Eagles are also off to a nice start of their own, going 2-0 in games against Cleveland State and Illinois State.

In those two games, EMU defensively gave up an average of only 52 points on roughly 33 percent shooting from the field, including just over 17 percent from three. The Eagles also forced an average of 18 turnovers in those two games.

Offensively, the Eagles are led by sophomore guard Courtnie Lewis, who’s averaging 18 points per game to start the season, albeit with no assists through two games. Also averaging double figures in points is redshirt sophomore guard Corrione Cardwell with 11, and redshirt senior guard Danielle Minott may be the team’s best all-around player with averages of 9.5 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 assists.

Outside of Carleton, the Cyclones have been led offensively through four games by Ashley Joens, who is averaging 12 points and 2.5 threes per game, and Madison Wise, who is averaging 10.5 points and nearly five rebounds to start the year.

Off the bench, Ines Nezerwa and Kristin Scott give the team a nice scoring punch down low with 9.8 and 8.8 points per game, respectively, to go along with 5.3 and 5.8 rebounds per game apiece.

Tip of in Chatham will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
